Colbie Caillat’s song “Try” has a powerful message for us all. She sings “you don’t have to try so hard, you don’t have bend until you break” The song’s powerful message to women is that it’s okay to just be yourself. At ESS we love this song because it speaks to the heart of a battle that many women and girls face in their lives every day. The battle to fit in, to feel beautiful, to feel like they are good enough.
The video for this song is so powerful. The visual representation of beautiful women – young and old of all colors, shapes, and sizes – singing these lyrics while taking off their make-up is such an important message we at ESS had to share it with you.
The song ends
Take your make up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don’t you like you?
Cause I like you
The song is not saying to never wear make-up or that spending time doing these things is wrong or bad. The point is that you don’t need to wear a mask or look like everyone else to be liked or to be beautiful. You are beautiful already.
We believe it is important to take care of yourself and to do what makes you feel beautiful. For many of us that means wearing a bit of make-up or getting our hair done. Nothing wrong with that at all.
However, the truth is you should feel beautiful from the inside and to remember that those around you like you for you – for who you are and all the little things that make you . . . well – you.
